Developing entrepreneurial leadership for a changing higher education landscape
Lucy Atkinson attended the Entrepreneurial University Leaders programme while progressing through a senior leadership role at Arden University. Seeking to strengthen her leadership approach in response to the rapidly evolving higher education landscape, she found the programme highly relevant, future-focused and intellectually stimulating.
Since completing the programme, Lucy has been promoted to Dean at Arden University. Reflecting on her journey, she shared:

Lucy rated the majority of the programme sessions as excellent, particularly those exploring entrepreneurial leadership, higher education policy, institutional transformation, culture, and leading through uncertainty. She described the overall experience as constructive, rewarding, challenging, innovative, future-facing, stimulating and critical.
Applying learning to a live strategic project
One of the programme’s greatest strengths was the opportunity to apply entrepreneurial leadership principles to a real institutional challenge.
During the programme, Lucy was leading the development of an AI-powered student onboarding app at Arden University. The project required her to work collaboratively with external technology vendors and colleagues from across the institution, bringing together diverse expertise to deliver an innovative solution for students.
As the project progressed, Lucy encountered several leadership challenges that are familiar across higher education transformation projects, including defining clear project requirements, engaging internal experts at the right time, and creating incentives for meaningful participation across teams.
The Entrepreneurial University Leaders programme provided practical frameworks that helped her navigate these challenges with greater confidence, reinforcing the importance of entrepreneurial thinking when leading complex, cross-functional initiatives.
A new perspective on leadership
For Lucy, one of the most valuable aspects of the programme was its focus on the realities of today’s higher education environment and the leadership capabilities needed to thrive within it.
“The presentations and opportunity to focus on the current HE landscape and how an entrepreneurial mindset is required was the most useful. It was very future-facing.”
The programme reinforced that entrepreneurial leadership is no longer optional for senior leaders but an essential capability for navigating financial pressures, regulatory change, technological disruption and shifting student expectations.
Lucy reflected that the programme had given her:
“The ability to know that approaching my role as Dean in an entrepreneurial way is required in the current and future HE landscape.”
Turning learning into action
Rather than viewing entrepreneurial leadership as an individual capability, Lucy has focused on embedding the learning across her faculty.
She plans to develop entrepreneurial thinking within her leadership team, working closely with Heads of School and Heads of Department to encourage more agile decision-making, intelligent risk-taking and collaborative leadership.
Reflecting on the impact the programme has had on her own approach, she explained:
“My approach to challenges and how to equip my direct leadership team with decisions and risks aligned with being entrepreneurial.”
Value for Arden University
Although Arden University already has a strong entrepreneurial culture, Lucy believes the programme offers valuable frameworks for sustaining innovation as institutions grow.
She highlighted the programme’s emphasis on transformational leadership under pressure, helping leaders maintain agility, safeguard quality and respond effectively to increasing regulatory expectations without losing the pace and adaptability that entrepreneurial institutions value.
Learning alongside sector leaders
Another defining feature of the programme for Lucy was the opportunity to learn alongside senior leaders from across the higher education sector.
She valued the diversity of perspectives from Russell Group universities, post-92 institutions and specialist providers, describing the access to peers and expert presenters as invaluable.
For an institution operating with a distinctive model such as Arden University, these conversations provided an important opportunity to benchmark approaches, understand how different institutions are responding to funding pressures, regulatory change and artificial intelligence, and identify opportunities for innovation ahead of wider sector trends.
Overall impact
Lucy left the programme with renewed confidence in leading entrepreneurially, a stronger professional network and practical tools that she continues to apply in her role as Dean.
