Why we are an entrepreneurial university: Northeastern University London

Why we are an entrepreneurial university: Northeastern University London

Our new article series explores the secrets behind the success of the 2025 Times Higher Education Outstanding Entrepreneurial University Award finalists, sponsored by NCEE. In our third profile, we visit Northeastern University London.

Entrepreneurship at Northeastern University London is not confined to a single department or programme, it is a defining ethos that runs through every aspect of our institution. Rooted in Northeastern’s century-long tradition of experiential learning, we have built a model where innovation, enterprise, and entrepreneurial thinking are embedded across curricula, research, partnerships, and student life.

At the heart of this vision is our Start-up Hub, launched in 2024, which has quickly become a vibrant ecosystem of 22 external start-ups. Unlike traditional incubators, the Start-up Hub is deliberately outward facing: it hosts real companies while simultaneously integrating student learning and engagement. Each start-up is assessed to identify its growth needs and paired with students who step into meaningful, embedded roles that extend far beyond internships. Students are not spectators, they are contributors shaping business models, driving growth, and developing ventures alongside founders. This unique design accelerates the growth of early-stage companies while equipping students with authentic entrepreneurial experience.

The impact is evident. Student-led ventures such as Qoos have been launched and supported within the Start-up Hub, while initiatives like our Entrepreneurship Bootcamp guide teams from ideation to viable business models, complete with seed funding opportunities. Beyond start-up creation, students gain real world exposure through consultancy projects for international social enterprises, placements with B Corps, and networking trips across London’s innovation ecosystem.

Our approach is amplified by cross-sector partnerships. In the past year alone, the Start-up Hub has hosted the UK Department for Business and Trade’s VC roundtable, engaged Deloitte Digital’s Chief Disruptor in postgraduate teaching, and partnered with global organisations such as Kickstart Global and the International Women’s Forum UK. These collaborations build bridges between government, industry, and academia, creating opportunities for our students and positioning the university at the heart of London’s entrepreneurial landscape.

We also extend our reach internationally. Joint showcases with Imperial College London and ESCP Business School connect our students to European innovation networks, while collaborations with Northeastern’s global campuses provide a transatlantic platform for entrepreneurial growth.

The results are tangible: students stepping into executive roles at start-ups, ventures scaling through mentorship and funding, and academic programmes enriched by real-world entrepreneurial practice. Perhaps most importantly, entrepreneurship at  Northeastern University London is not peripheral, it permeates every part of the institution. Faculty integrate enterprise into teaching and research; alumni return as mentors and investors; and governance structures embed innovation into strategic decision-making.

Northeastern University London is not simply producing entrepreneurs, it is reshaping what a university can be. By embedding entrepreneurship across disciplines, fostering live connections to start-ups, and creating a global-local ecosystem, we have become a launchpad for ideas, ventures, and bold futures.
