Professor Ameur Cherif

Professor Ameur Cherif obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Natural Sciences from the Faculty of Sciences of Tunis in 1995. He continued with a Master degree (DEA, Diplôme d’Études Approfondies) in Genetics and Molecular Biology in 1997 and a Ph.D. in Biological Sciences, specializing in Microbiology, in 2001. He was an Assistant in Biological Sciences at the University of Tunis (2001-2004) and an Assistant Professor in Microbiology at the Higher Institute of Biotechnology of Sidi Thabet (ISBST) at the University of Manouba (UMA) (2004-2007). In 2007, Prof. Cherif obtained his habilitation and was appointed as an Associate Professor, later promoted to Full Professor in 2012.

At ISBST, he coordinated and taught several microbiology modules and served as the director of ISBST for two consecutive terms (2010-2014). Since 2011, he has been the founder and director of the Research Laboratory “Biotechnology and Valorization of Bio-Geo Resources, LR11ES31,” collaborating with a multidisciplinary team on microbial ecology and biotechnologies.

Professor Cherif has supervised 16 completed doctoral theses (with 6 others in progress), 33 research master’s theses, and 40 undergraduate projects. He is the author or co-author of more than 170 scientific articles (h-index: 36, 4647 citations, Scopus, July 2024), one book, 12 book chapters, and 4 patents. A keynote speaker, editor-in-chief, and reviewer for several journals, he is also an evaluator of various research projects.

He is involved in numerous national and international projects, including VRR, PNRI, PRF, COST, EU FP7, H2020, PRIMA, ERASMUS-CBHE, and PAQ. In 2017, Professor Cherif was elected Vice President of the University of Manouba, in charge of scientific research, and was re-elected for a second term (2021-2024). In 2024, he was elected President of the University of Manouba for the 2024-2027 term.
