The Universities in Place series showcases how universities are embedding entrepreneurship within their regions, supporting local communities, and contributing to economic and social renewal. In our second profile, we visit Imperial College London.
Universities in Place act as anchor institutions. They are embedded in their communities, shaping local economies, nurturing talent, and connecting people, ideas and opportunity. At Imperial College London, this role is not an add-on but central to the institution’s mission.
Guided by its Science for Humanity strategy, Imperial acts deliberately and at scale. The university powers innovation in west London, strengthens entrepreneurship nationally, and extends its reach globally through place-based hubs designed to respond to local needs while addressing global challenges.
Place-based impact in West London: powering the West Tech Corridor
Imperial’s most visible local impact is rooted in west London, where it is a founding anchor of the West Tech Corridor — a network of research and innovation clusters centred around key Imperial locations including South Kensington, Paddington, White City and the Old Oak/Park Royal regeneration zone.
At the heart of this ecosystem is Imperial’s White City Campus, a 23-acre innovation district bringing together researchers, startups, scale-ups, corporates, local authorities and community partners. Imperial has intentionally co-located a number of key facilities within this ecosystem, including:
White City Incubator, supporting early-stage deep-tech and science-based startups
Advanced Hackspace, offering prototyping, fabrication and engineering facilities
Scale Space, a scale-up community helping high-growth businesses expand and create jobs
Together, these initiatives enable local founders — including Imperial students, staff, alumni and community entrepreneurs — to develop ideas into businesses without leaving the area. The White City Incubator’s recognition as Best Incubator and Co-working Space at the West London Business Awards reflects its contribution to strengthening the local economy and innovation pipeline.
Imperial’s impact in west London extends beyond physical infrastructure. Its presence attracts investment, talent and partners to the area, supporting thousands of jobs and reinforcing west London’s position as one of Europe’s leading deep-tech clusters. Through open events, mentoring programmes, schools engagement and partnerships with local councils and businesses, Imperial also plays an active civic role, helping to ensure that the benefits of innovation are felt locally as well as globally.
National impact: scaling opportunity and access across the UK
As a University in Place, Imperial also recognises its responsibility beyond London. In recent years, the university has expanded programmes designed to support entrepreneurship nationally, particularly for under-represented founders and ventures addressing societal challenges.
A flagship example is WE Innovate National, the expansion of Imperial’s award-winning women-led pre-accelerator programme. Originally developed in London, WE Innovate now operates in partnership with universities across the UK. A 2024 pilot with Queen’s University Belfast supported 50 teams and culminated in a £60,000 Grand Final. By 2026, the programme aims to reach seven universities and support 175 women-led teams across the country.
Imperial is also playing a leading role in scaling climate innovation through EarthScale, a UK-wide programme delivered by Imperial Enterprise Lab and Undaunted. EarthScale supports later-stage climate-tech ventures from across the country as they address the challenges of scaling, including access to manufacturing, regulation, supply chains and investment. By supporting founders wherever they are based, EarthScale strengthens regional innovation ecosystems while helping UK climate solutions reach global markets.
These programmes reflect Imperial’s place-based philosophy. Rather than concentrating opportunity solely in London, the university works with regional partners to build confidence, capability and connectivity, enabling entrepreneurial talent to thrive across the UK.
Imperial also contributes to national practice through knowledge-sharing and system leadership. The Network for Coaching and Mentoring Entrepreneurs, supported by Enterprise Lab, connects more than 120 enterprise educators globally and has helped universities across the UK develop services based on Imperial’s models, such as Experts-in-Residence programmes. Through this work, Imperial acts as a connector within the wider entrepreneurship landscape.
Global hubs: place-led innovation on an international scale
Imperial’s commitment to place extends beyond national borders. In 2024 the university launched Imperial Global, establishing hubs in strategically important locations including Ghana, Singapore, India and the United States. Each hub is designed to respond to local contexts while connecting founders into Imperial’s wider innovation ecosystem.
One example is Imperial Global Ghana, which plays a central role in delivering the Commonwealth Startup Fellowship. Delivered in partnership with the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and the Commonwealth Scholarships Commission, the fellowship supports founders from low- and middle-income countries to scale ventures addressing regional challenges. From more than 1,400 applicants, 20 founders joined the inaugural cohort, taking part in a bootcamp in Ghana followed by a showcase in London.
Rather than exporting a single model, Imperial works closely with local partners, investors and entrepreneurial ecosystems to build capacity, support inclusive innovation, and enable founders to grow businesses that address the needs of their own communities.
Imperial’s global place-based approach is also reflected in Undaunted, its climate innovation centre. Undaunted co-developed the Earthshot Climate Innovation Network, a coalition of 17 global accelerators working together to scale 10,000 climate solutions this decade. Through this network, Imperial connects local climate innovators to international markets, policy environments and investors, accelerating impact where it is most needed.
A University in Place, locally rooted and globally connected
Imperial’s entrepreneurial achievements — including being named Europe’s leading large university for startup creation and the only university with two hubs in the Financial Times’ Top 125 European Startup Hubs — are closely linked to its place-based approach.
Whether anchoring the West Tech Corridor, expanding opportunity across the UK, or supporting founders in Ghana, Singapore and San Francisco, Imperial acts intentionally as a University in Place: strengthening communities, connecting ecosystems, and enabling innovation to grow responsibly.
Looking ahead, Imperial’s ambition is to continue using its knowledge, networks and resources to shape places for the better — ensuring that innovation drives not only economic growth but also meaningful social and environmental impact wherever the university operates.
Examples such as this remind us that entrepreneurial universities are not only centres of knowledge, but catalysts for regional innovation and community development. The NCEE Entrepreneurial University Award recognises institutions that demonstrate this kind of leadership and impact.
