Open to all our members we are running a free series of online masterclasses exploring the potential of AI in higher education.
The third masterclass on 1 May 2025, 12:00-13:00 (UK) will address AI and society: five scenarios for universities. The session will be led by Dr James Ransom, Head of Research, NCEE.
Slides from the first session – AI, teaching & learning, and the end of the entrepreneurial university? – are available here. The paper Universities and AI: Developing New Models of Teaching and Learning in the Realm of Radical Uncertainty is available here.
Slides from the second session – AI and research: what role for universities? – are available here.

Session 3: AI and society: five scenarios for universities
Our first session focused on the impact of AI here and now, and how it is already shaping teaching and learning. In our second session, we expanded our horizon into the near future, and explored how AI might shape research, and the potentially massive implications for universities. In session three, we'll be looking at the third major pillar of university activity: engagement with society, including regional development and business collaboration. We'll do this through five future scenarios, giving you a roadmap for how you might prepare your institution for the changes that lie ahead. (Note: you don't need to have attended the first two sessions to benefit from session three.)
James is Head of Research at NCEE, and an Honorary Senior Research Fellow at UCL Institute of Education. He has received support from Open Philanthropy to study AI governance and, together with Dr Richard Whittle at the University of Salford, recently authored a paper on AI and universities for the EU-funded N-TUTORR project.
