American University of Nigeria

American University of Nigeria

The goal of AUN is to train the future leaders of Africa and to serve as both a stimulus and agent of economic development throughout the region. All students, regardless of academic specialization, receive high-level training in information technology, entrepreneurship and in arts and sciences, all of which are the key to future sustainable development. AUN is committed to providing the skills and the leadership essential to advancing the continent's pressing social and economic challenges.

The American University of Nigeria was founded by former Nigerian Vice President Atiku Abubakar to offer an American-style education within Nigeria. It began as ABTI University in 2003 before later adopting the AUN name. Construction of its campus started in 2004 on land donated by the Lamido of Adamawa. The university admitted its first group of students in 2005–2006. From the beginning, AUN was designed as Africa’s first “Development University,” combining liberal arts education with problem-solving focused on societal needs. Its early academic structure included the Schools of Arts & Sciences, Business & Entrepreneurship, and Information Technology & Computing. Over time, AUN expanded its programs to include additional schools such as Law, Engineering, and various graduate studies. The National Universities Commission granted accreditation in 2008 and re-accredited its programs in 2013. AUN has continued to invest in modern facilities, including a major digital library. Today, the university positions itself as a centre for leadership development, technology-driven learning, and community impact in Nigeria and across Africa.
